33 imagesLegend has it that Ponce de Leon died looking for the fountain of youth in Florida in the 1600’s. The “fountain of youth” is a compelling idea. Many are looking for its equivalent, to achieve its benefits. What is that about? Eternity in a moment? Everlasting innocence? Salvation? Freedom from pain, aging, and disease? Maybe. I believe it is freedom from self, one’s own terrifying mind and the product of that freedom: enduring joy…. happiness and serenity if you will. Photography and photographs do that for me. Its process and products keep me in the moment, and in the moment I find, joy, energy and excitement that wakes me up to all life has to offer. In those moments I have the feeling I will live forever. Is that art? The question seems rather inconsequential relative to the benefit, so who cares? I get what I need from the practice. The pictures shown here were all made in Florida but they are not just about the place or what one finds in the geo-political State of Florida. They are of a state of mind and heart One of my favorite photographers, Garry Winogrand said “nothing is as mysterious as a fact clearly stated”. I wholeheartedly agree and would complement it by adding, nothing is as exhilarating as a moment fully experienced.
